How bad are the Yam HPDI big blocs?

I would like to purchase a pro v 2004 with a HPDI 300HP Yamaha, but have heard they have many problems with the 225 250 and 300 HPDI. They take to much oil, heads blow, some compare it to the FITCH (worst motor ever). Any bad luck with your HPDI 2003, 2004 ,2005?

I have an 04 300 vmax hpdi with close to 100 hrs. and never had a problem. As far as the oil thing, there is a service bulletin on the oil pump to be replaced. There is a code on the pump arm. Any dealer can check it to see if it needs to be replaced. I think they are great motors..

I Dont Have any problems with my 06 V-Max 250, The Boat Runs Strong....

Unless it's already blown up once or twice and has a series 2 powerhead on it I wouldnt buy that one. The oil pump recall increases the amount of oil the engine gets at certain rpm's (to help with their reliability issues) so you would notice an increase in consumption. The new series 2 3.3l hpdi's are good so far.

what does the series 2 have on it that my yamaha doesn't? this is the guys boat that jeff worked on,he installed a phase 3 kit.
